Hundreds of Street Vendors in Cicadas Affected by Bandung BRT Project, Relocation Site Still Uncertain
BANDUNG — The Bandung City Office of Cooperatives and Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) is preparing relocation options for street vendors affected by the construction of the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) corridor, particularly in the Cicadas area. Compensation schemes are considered difficult to implement as they do not comply with existing regulations, making relocation the primary solution being considered by the city government.
However, uncertainty still surrounds the future of the affected vendors. Data on the number of impacted street vendors compiled by the Ministry of Transportation has yet to be finalized. Preliminary figures indicate that around 555 vendors are affected by the project, while independent data collected by Cicadas street vendor groups records approximately 540 active vendors.
Beyond data discrepancies, uncertainty also remains regarding the relocation site and the budget allocation for vendor restructuring, both of which have not yet been determined. These issues are still under discussion by the Bandung City Street Vendor Management Coordination Team.
The lack of clarity has triggered resistance among vendors toward the BRT corridor development. Street vendors have questioned the certainty of alternative business locations and the sustainability of their livelihoods amid the ongoing infrastructure project.
