List of Electric Vehicle Factories in Indonesia, from Hyundai to VinFast
Bandung – Indonesia is stepping up its commitment to developing the electric vehicle (EV) industry by welcoming manufacturing plants from various global automakers. Several major brands are no longer just selling EVs in the country but have also begun producing and assembling vehicles locally.
Currently, a number of EV factories are already in operation, including Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Indonesia (HMMI) in Cikarang, which produces models such as the Ioniq 5, as well as Wuling Motors, which locally assembles the Wuling Air EV. The presence of these facilities marks Indonesia’s initial shift from being an import market to becoming a production base for electric vehicles.
In addition, Vietnam-based automaker VinFast has also started operations at its manufacturing facility in West Java. The plant is expected to become one of the key production hubs for electric vehicles serving both the domestic market and exports across Southeast Asia.
Beyond these developments, several other brands have announced investment commitments, including BYD, GAC Aion, Citroën, Geely, Maxus, Volkswagen, and Xpeng. Most of these manufacturers have chosen West Java as their production location due to its proximity to ports, industrial zones, and an already established automotive supply chain.
The government views the arrival of EV factories as an important momentum for strengthening the national industry. In addition to creating new jobs, local production is expected to stimulate the growth of domestic component manufacturing, ranging from vehicle bodies to electrical systems.
Indonesia also holds a strategic advantage in the form of large nickel reserves, a key raw material for EV batteries. With a combination of natural resources and manufacturing investments, the government aims for Indonesia to become not only a consumer market but also a major player in the global electric vehicle supply chain.
Automotive analysts believe that the growing number of EV factories will make electric car prices more competitive over the next few years. However, they caution that challenges remain, particularly in increasing local content levels, workforce readiness, and the equitable development of supporting infrastructure.
With more manufacturers continuing to build facilities across the country, Indonesia is now on an accelerated path toward a more independent and sustainable electric vehicle ecosystem.
