JAKARTA – Even after stepping down as Indonesia’s 7th President, Joko Widodo’s (Jokowi) political shadow remains long. The Indonesian Solidarity Party (PSI), a youth-oriented party, is betting its entire future on the belief that Jokowi’s political “magic” is still intact—despite him no longer holding the levers of state power.
Adi Prayitno, Executive Director of Parameter Politik Indonesia, suggests that PSI’s recent national meeting in Makassar was a strategic move to solidify this “Jokowi effect.” The big question remains: Can a former leader, now without a formal party or office, still act as the ultimate kingmaker?
The Ultimate Litmus Test
Jokowi’s political record is legendary—undefeated from city hall to the presidential palace. However, for the first time, he is operating outside the machinery of the PDI-P, the ruling party that backed his rise.
“The public is wondering: can this ‘invincibility’ be transferred to PSI now that Jokowi is no longer president?” Prayitno noted during a televised debate on Sunday (Feb 1, 2026).
There are two schools of thought currently debating his relevance:
- The Loyalists: Believe Jokowi’s sky-high approval ratings and personal brand are enough to sway millions.
- The Realists: Argue that without control over the state bureaucracy and a massive party machine, his influence will naturally wane.
‘God-Tier’ Political Directives
During his recent address to PSI, Jokowi didn’t just offer well-wishes; he issued what Prayitno calls “God-tier political directives.” He instructed the party to build a massive grassroots structure reaching down to the smallest neighborhood units (RT/RW).
“For a party with big dreams, the structure must be equally massive,” Prayitno said, paraphrasing Jokowi’s advice.
While PSI officials, including Bestari Barus, remain confident in the “Jokowi brand,” the upcoming elections will serve as the definitive test: Is Jokowi’s influence tied to his character, or was it merely a product of his office?
