Bandung City Government Reviews the Future of the Zoo, No Final Decision Yet
BANDUNG — The Bandung City Government has confirmed that discussions regarding the future management of the Bandung Zoo are being conducted carefully, taking into account historical, environmental, and broader public interests.
As of now, no final decision has been made regarding the future of the zoo’s management. Bandung Mayor Muhammad Farhan stated that the city administration is currently conducting a joint review with the West Java Provincial Government and the central government to ensure that any policy decision aligns with the respective authorities and legal mandates.
Farhan explained that the Bandung Zoo is an asset owned by the Bandung City Government, while authority over the supervision of protected wildlife falls under the central and provincial governments.
According to him, the issue cannot be addressed hastily as it involves regional assets, wildlife protection, and broader public interests. Therefore, the entire review process is being carried out cautiously and comprehensively.
The Bandung City Government also emphasized that during the evaluation process, the zoo will continue to function as a public green open space accessible to residents, while remaining compliant with applicable regulations.
The area is considered to have significant historical and ecological value, which must be preserved collectively. As part of the ongoing study, several policy options are still being examined as potential considerations.
All of these options remain open and have not yet led to a specific policy direction. The city government stressed that input from various stakeholders, including experts and the public, will form an integral part of the evaluation process.
Farhan added that any future policy must strike a balance between environmental conservation, respect for historical values, and the long-term needs of Bandung residents.
In addition, the city government reiterated that while the zoo land is a municipal asset, wildlife conservation licensing authority lies with the Ministry of Forestry.
In line with this, the Bandung City Government continues to prioritize animal welfare, including oversight of feeding practices and coordination with relevant ministries.
The Bandung City Government also committed to maintaining transparency throughout the review process and keeping communication channels open with all stakeholders. The results of the assessment will be made public after cross-sectoral discussions are completed.
