Electric Vehicle Sales Rise, but Conventional Cars Still Dominate the Market

Bandung – Electric vehicle sales in Indonesia have shown a positive growth trend over the past two years, driven by increasing public interest in environmentally friendly transportation. Despite this progress, EVs still account for only a small portion of total national vehicle sales compared to fossil-fuel-powered vehicles.

This growth has been supported by the introduction of more affordable EV models, along with government incentives such as tax benefits and simplified regulations. The presence of manufacturers producing electric vehicles locally has also helped reduce retail prices in the domestic market.

However, automotive observers note that EV adoption in Indonesia continues to face several challenges. In addition to relatively higher prices compared to conventional cars in certain segments, limited charging infrastructure and concerns over driving range remain key considerations for consumers.

On the other hand, public awareness of environmental issues is gradually increasing. Younger generations and urban users are emerging as the fastest adopters of electric vehicles, particularly for daily commuting needs.

The government is aiming to accelerate the national EV population in line with plans to phase out incentives for imported electric cars starting in 2026, while shifting focus toward local production. This policy is expected to strengthen domestic industry while expanding public access to electric vehicles at more competitive prices.

Market analysts predict that EV sales growth will become more pronounced in the coming years, especially with the expansion of public charging station networks and a wider range of models available across different price segments.

Although the road toward EV dominance remains long, current trends indicate that Indonesia is gradually entering a transition phase from conventional vehicles to electric-based mobility.
