Indonesian QRIS e-Wallet Now Usable for Transactions in Malaysia

Jakarta — Indonesian digital payment users can now enjoy a new convenience when traveling to Malaysia, as the Quick Response Code Indonesian Standard (QRIS) has been integrated with Malaysia’s national QR payment system, DuitNow QR, allowing cross-border retail payments between the two countries for the first time.

The cross-border QR payment linkage between Indonesia and Malaysia was commercially launched after a successful pilot phase, enabling users to make instant payments simply by scanning either QRIS or DuitNow QR codes at supported merchants in both countries using their local e-wallets or banking apps.

Bank Negara Malaysia and Bank Indonesia highlighted that this initiative strengthens regional payment connectivity in ASEAN, making payments faster, more secure, and more efficient for consumers and merchants alike. The linkage is expected to boost economic activity, especially in tourism and small business sectors, by reducing reliance on cash and facilitating easier transactions for travelers.

Updated data from Bank Indonesia shows that cross-border QRIS transactions between Malaysia and Indonesia are among the highest in the ASEAN region, with millions of transactions recorded annually. This demonstrates strong adoption and confidence in QR-based payments for cross-border retail use.

Alongside Malaysia, QRIS cross-border payments are now available in other countries such as Thailand, Singapore, and Japan, with plans to expand the network further. This progress is part of broader efforts to enhance digital payment integration and financial inclusion across the region.
