Mayor of Bandung Reaffirms Long-Term Commitment to Tackle Waste Management Challenges

Bandung – Mayor of Bandung, Muhammad Farhan, emphasized that waste management remains one of the city’s most pressing challenges and is receiving serious attention from the municipal government.

Farhan made the statement while attending the Wanda Sunda Art Performance on Saturday (January 17, 2026). He noted that in recent days, he has spent significant time on the ground to ensure that urban issues, particularly waste management, are addressed in a measured and sustainable manner.

According to Farhan, Bandung generates approximately 1,500 tons of waste per day. He stressed that this volume cannot be left unmanaged and requires systematic and serious handling.

“The handling of waste cannot be done instantly. A strong foundation and careful planning are essential so that the solutions implemented are not temporary but address long-term needs,” Farhan explained.

The mayor stated that the Bandung city government is developing a five- to ten-year waste management framework, which is expected to form the basis of sustainable waste practices. He also assured that the government’s commitment goes beyond policy statements and is realized through concrete actions on the ground. Farhan called on all elements of society to actively participate in maintaining cleanliness and environmental sustainability in Bandung.

In his remarks, Farhan also welcomed the Wanda Sunda Art Performance. He praised the role of artists, academics, cultural activists, and senior figures who continue to preserve and strengthen the city’s cultural heritage amid urban challenges.

He highlighted the strategic role of the academic community in cultural development. “Through scholarly studies, society can understand the historical roots, significance, and future direction of artistic works and cultural expressions,” Farhan noted.

Reflecting on Bandung’s long journey, he described the city’s transformation from a cosmopolitan hub in the early 20th century, through periods of social and political upheaval in the mid-century, to a phase of stability in the 1980s–1990s, and now facing new dynamics in the 21st century.

He argued that each phase of change has always been underpinned by the city’s cultural values, which continue to unite residents and newcomers alike. Farhan, himself a migrant from Bogor who moved to Bandung in 1975, said the city’s culture has profoundly shaped his identity.

With a population density of around 15,000 residents per square kilometer, Farhan observed that Bandung has evolved into a unique ecosystem of ideas. The assimilation of influences from the north, south, east, and west has created diverse characters and cultural expressions, enriching Bandung’s identity.
