PERSIS Deploys Second Wave of Volunteers to Build Temporary Shelters in Post-Disaster Aceh
Bandung — Persatuan Islam (PERSIS) has once again dispatched volunteers to Aceh to continue the construction of temporary shelters (hunian sementara/huntara) for communities affected by recent disasters. The deployment of this second wave reflects PERSIS’s sustained commitment to long-term post-disaster recovery efforts.
National Coordinator of PERSIS Peduli, Faisal Nursyamsi, S.E., stated that the volunteer deployment is being carried out in two phases. Four volunteers departed on Saturday (January 17), followed by six more scheduled to leave on Wednesday.
“This second wave is conducted in two departures. Four volunteers today, and six more on Wednesday,” Faisal said during the send-off ceremony at the PERSIS Central Executive Office on Perintis Kemerdekaan Street, Bandung.
The first group of volunteers consists of H. Nurjaman, Olis Nurholis, Budiawan Reza, and Ihsan, who will resume humanitarian work assisting flood-affected communities across several areas in Aceh.
Faisal explained that PERSIS Peduli has so far completed six temporary shelters in Kota Cane, Aceh, with more units planned in response to field conditions and community needs.
“Our target in Kota Cane is to construct a total of 21 temporary shelters,” he said.
Meanwhile, shelter needs in Pengidam Village remain significant, with the team aiming to build approximately 27 additional units to ensure displaced residents can access safe and adequate temporary housing.
In Batu Sumbang, the demand is substantially higher.
“For Batu Sumbang, the estimated need could reach around 100 temporary shelters, and we hope to exceed that number if possible,” Faisal added.
Beyond housing, PERSIS Peduli is also providing educational assistance. A total of 500 school bags have been prepared for children affected by the disaster in Bireuen and Pidie Jaya Regencies, scheduled for distribution alongside the next volunteer deployment.
Chairman of the Central Executive Board of PERSIS, Dr. KH. Jeje Zaenudin, M.Ag., expressed gratitude for the volunteers’ willingness to serve amid challenging conditions. He noted that the disaster occurred against a backdrop of ongoing social and economic vulnerability in the affected communities.
“We are grateful that volunteers are still ready to be deployed, as these disasters in Sumatra have struck communities already facing poverty,” he said.
Jeje emphasized that PERSIS has coordinated closely from the outset to ensure disaster response efforts are well-targeted and based on accurate information, allowing assistance programs to address real needs on the ground.
He further stated that the construction of temporary shelters represents “dakwah bil hal”—practical, action-based outreach carried out through tangible humanitarian work.
“Our volunteers are ambassadors of the organization. Their sacrifices become a form of long-term outreach, as long as they are grounded in sincerity,” he said.
Jeje also revealed that donations collected through Lazpersis have reached nearly Rp 3 billion, which will be allocated toward shelter construction and other essential needs for disaster-affected communities.
“We strive to safeguard this trust responsibly while upholding the good name of the organization among the people of Aceh,” he concluded.
