President Prabowo Allocates Rp4 Trillion in Additional University Research Funding to Support Industrial Downstreaming
The government is strengthening the role of universities in supporting national industrial development by allocating an additional Rp4 trillion in research funding. The policy was announced by President Prabowo Subianto during a meeting with leaders of public and private universities at the State Palace in Jakarta, as reported by MSN Indonesia.
The additional funding is designated for scientific research activities within universities that are oriented toward industrial development and resource downstreaming. Higher education institutions are expected to produce applied research that can be directly utilized in strategic national projects.
During the meeting, which lasted several hours, President Prabowo emphasized the importance of university-led research in strengthening Indonesiaβs economic self-reliance. Research outcomes from universities are expected to serve as key references for the Daya Anagata Nusantara Investment Management Agency (Danantara), particularly in the development of dozens of strategic downstreaming projects and waste-to-energy programs.
The government views the strengthening of research capacity as a crucial step amid increasingly complex global geopolitical dynamics. With abundant natural resources, Indonesia is expected to manage its potential independently through innovation and technology driven by domestic research.
In addition to enhancing research, the President also highlighted the role of universities in producing high-quality human resources. Universities are seen as a driving force in boosting national capacity in science, technology, and global competitiveness.
The forum also discussed several national challenges, including the ongoing shortage of medical doctors. The government emphasized the need to accelerate the fulfillment of healthcare personnel through the strengthening of higher education in the medical field.
Improving the overall quality of higher education remains a key priority, covering faculty standards as well as educational facilities and infrastructure. The government is currently reviewing measures to reduce the operational burden of public universities to ensure campus development does not place additional pressure on students.
With the increase in research funding, universities are expected to play a more active role in advancing industrial downstreaming, strengthening national innovation, and contributing directly to sustainable economic growth.
